Rasheed Balogun, a Nigerian professor living in the US, becomes first Black president of the International Society for Apheresis.

A Nigerian-born medical expert, Professor Rasheed Balogun, who lives in the United States, has been elected as the International President of the International Society for Apheresis (ISFA).

This is a historic achievement because he is the first Black person to hold the position. It is a big step forward for global medical leadership and a strong recognition of the work African doctors have done to improve healthcare around the world.

Professor Balogun is a well-known nephrologist who has worked at the University of Virginia (UVA) Health System in Charlottesville for many years. He is a seasoned professor of pathology and medicine there. He is an expert in therapeutic apheresis, a medical treatment that takes toxic elements out of the blood.

Professor Balogun started his academic career at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria. He then moved to the University of Connecticut in the United States, where he earned his degrees.His story is a testament to the kind of impact that skilled and passionate professionals from Africa can have on the global stage.

He is the Regional Medical Director at UVA, where he oversees 12 outpatient dialysis units that are spread out over 120 miles in Central and Southern Virginia. He runs two hemodialysis units for people who are in the hospital and also in charge of the university’s Extracorporeal Therapies (Apheresis) Program.

Professor Balogun has been a key figure in changing the field through clinical practice, cutting-edge research, and interdisciplinarity education. He is the founder and director of Therapeutic Apheresis Academy. This is a nationally recognized multidisciplinary conference which brings together doctors and specialists from all over the US to deliberate on the newest developments in the field. Balogun is also a fellow of several prestigious groups, such as the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, the American Society of Nephrology, the American College of Physicians, and the National Kidney Foundation (USA).

He is very active in promoting diversity and inclusion in medicine. He was the head of the Internal Medicine Section and the Nephrology Subsection of the National Medical Association (USA). He has also worked as an editor and advisor for many medical journals, including the Journal of Clinical Apheresis. He was also a key member of the American Society for Apheresis committee that made the national clinical guidelines for therapeutic apheresis.

Professor Balogun’s election as president of ISFA is both a personal achievement as well as a sign of progress in the medical space. It shows how African and Nigerian professionals are having more of an impact on global health policies and practices.

It is hoped that his leadership will aid the society’s goal of spreading apheresis medicine around the world through education, research, and working together.
