Maryam Bukar Hassan, a Nigerian poet and spoken-word artist better known by her stage name Alhanislam, has been named the United Nations Global Advocate for Peace.

This is a huge honor for art and youth advocacy. The announcement was made between July 25 and 26, 2025. This is the first time someone has been awarded this important title within the UN’s Peace and Security Pillar.

This unprecedented appointment shows that the United Nations is more and more committed to putting young voices and artistic expressions at the center of efforts to foster peace around the world. Maryam is a well-known poet, social entrepreneur, and activist. Her powerful performances combine topics of gender equality, youth empowerment, and building peace in a way that includes everyone.

A Voice for Those Who Don’t Have One:

Maryam was born and raised in Nigeria. She has made a name for herself by using poetry as a powerful way to fight injustice and provide a voice to people who are often left out. People all across the world connect with what she says because it has messages that make people connect. She has been on some of the most important platforms on the globe over her career.

Her work has been displayed at the World Bank Youth Summit, the UN SDG Awards, and TED Talks. She prepared a wonderful poetry video for the International Day of Peace as part of the United Nations’ “Peace Begins With Me” campaign, which was one of her best efforts. Maryam also appeared at the UN Summit of the Future, where she recited a spoken-word poetry that buttress how vital it is for people all around the world to work together to make the world a safer and more peaceful place.

Maryam got the Sustainable Africa Award at COP28 for her work on sustainability, advocacy, and youth leadership. She was one of the finalists for the 2024 UN SDG Creativity Award, which highlights how creative she was in utilizing art to spread the word about the Sustainable Development Goals. These awards show that the person has a profession based on passion, purpose, and a strong belief that stories can alter society.

What it means to be a UN Global Advocate for Peace:

Maryam will work closely with the Peace and Security Pillar of the United Nations in her new role as the UN Global Advocate for Peace. She will help bring to the table important global issues including Women, Peace and Security (WPS) and Youth, Peace and Security (YPS).

She connects with people around the world through telling stories, using digital media, giving speeches, and taking part in international events and initiatives. One of the first things she will do in this new job is play at the SummerStage Festival in New York City on July 27.

Maryam’s appointment is a big deal not just for her, but for Nigeria and all of Africa. It shows how crucial African voices are in global talks about peace and security and how many innovative people on the continent are dedicated to making the world a better place.
