Dangote Reveals plan to Build Largest Seaport in Ogun State, Nigeria

The richest man in Africa, Aliko Dangote, unveils his great plan to open a Seaport Ogun State, Southwest Nigeria.

This time, it’s a world-class seaport in Olokola, Ogun State, which he says will be Nigeria’s deepest and most advanced.This new business is going to change the way things are done in Nigeria’s maritime industry and help the Dangote Group’s growing industrial reach.

Dangote told Bloomberg in Lagos recently that his team sent in official papers for the port project at the end of June.The port’s proposed location, just over 100 kilometers from his huge refinery and fertilizer plant in Lekki, Lagos, is carefully chosen to make it easier for goods to move, including fertilizers, petrochemicals, and liquefied natural gas (LNG).”We’re not trying to take over the industry,” Dangote said.

“But building this kind of infrastructure can make it easier for more entrepreneurs and investors to do the same.”

Dangote refinery currently ships out fertilizers and urea out of its site using private jetty. This is only a temporary fix, though; the Olokola project will be much bigger than this.If the go-ahead is given, the Atlantic-facing seaport could soon be as important as some of Lagos’s most important ports, like the Lekki Deep Sea Port, which opened recently with help from Chinese partners.It’s interesting that Dangote isn’t new to Olokola.He first looked at the area’s Free Trade Zone for his huge refinery project, but he had to move because of problems with the local government.

Now that those tensions are said to be over under the current administration, Dangote is ready to come back and start development plans again.The billionaire has more plans for his business.

Part of his big plans is also to build pipelines from the heart of Niger Delta to the coast, which would serve as a big LNG export project from Lagos state.

The Vice President of the Dangote Group of Nigeria, Devakumar Edwin, says the project should be able to compete with Nigeria LNG Ltd., Africa’s biggest LNG exporter.

Edwin said, “We want to deliver more gas than NLNG does now.” He went on to say that the company has already found areas with a lot of gas and will send that supply to the coast for processing and export.At his Lekki plant, Dangote already uses natural gas as a main ingredient in making fertilizer. Hydrogen is taken out of the gas to make ammonia, which is necessary for high-quality crop nutrients.

As part of the group’s aggressive growth plan, they will start sending out 4,000 gas-powered trucks across Nigeria in August to deliver fuel.

Some people are worried that the oil industry could become a monopoly, but Dangote says that the move is only meant to make distribution more efficient.Aliko Dangote is worth $27.8 billion, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index. He also runs huge networks of cement and sugar businesses all over Africa.The Olokola seaport project could be one of his biggest changes yet.

It would bring together logistics, industry, and national development to start a new era for Nigeria.
